Variations for Ophicleide - Euphonium
Composed by Friedrich Kummer, Arranged by Stephen Mead. This piece should arouse more than historical interest in euphonium players as it is a classic piece of mid-19th century wind music, composed to show off the dexterity of ophicleidists who clearly had the facility to play large leaps, fast running scales, cheeky melodies and, surprisingly, attempt some operatic-style sections which demonstrate a romanticism which one might naturally assume might be absent, given the nature of the instrument.
